They shouldn’t be controversial, but in today’s society they definitely are.
1. They are under their father’s authority and care until they are married, then they will be under their husband’s.
2. They should prepare to be homemakers, not career women.
3. Modesty is a biblical command, not a preference.
4. Headcovering isn’t cultural, it’s Biblical.
5. To keep their minds, hearts, and bodies sexually pure. But also, that sex inside of marriage is a very good and enjoyable thing.
6. A man will have to ask and receive permission from their father to pursue them romantically.
7. Men and women are different by design, and God has different roles for each outlined in His Word.
8. Feminism opposes biblical womanhood.
9. It is wise to have marketable skills that can contribute to the home economy.
10. Being countercultural is part of the Christian life.
11. Serving others is greater than seeking self.
12. God’s Word is the final authority.
13. Hard things are good for you.
14. The heart is deceitful.
15. Meekness and quietness are feminine virtues, not weakness.
I know this is very different from what’s common in our culture. I’m also aware that some may even find it offensive—but my husband and I believe it’s Biblical.
People often ask, “How do your children respond to this? Are they okay with it? Do they ever ask to do things differently?”
So far, they joyfully walk in these truths. My oldest daughter is 17, and my youngest is 2. I understand that much can change over time, but we don’t parent this way based on pragmatism. Many are focused on “what works” (at least in their own eyes), but our aim is to be faithful to what we believe God has called us to—as best as we can understand it in this season.
We trust the Lord to determine the outcome. We know He is sovereign over salvation, and all His ways are good. Because of that, we obey without fear. Our children are under His sovereign care. We rest in His promises, and we know that all His paths are peace and life for those who follow Him.
Are you teaching any of these to your daughters? I’d love to hear from you in the comments.
Abiding in Christ,
Stacey
