I’m not a content creator at all but trying to keep my brain from going to mush and be a thoughtful consumer while being at home with my little kids- it’s desperately isolating and substack feels like it scratches the itch of engaging my brain with the long form content a little.
I appreciated your thoughts and strategies. As a Christian content creator, I have recently gone through a change. I decided to give up my ministry's FB & IG to focus on Pinterest and YouTube. I was wasting so much time for little return on FB/IG. It's easy to become a slave to the scroll. So far, I find myself having a lot more time to write, which is the purpose of my ministry. Everyone must find what works for them. Kudos to you!
I've found a good rhythm in using socials after my morning Bible reading, before my kids are up, then shutting it down until later in the evening, after things have wound down for the day. "The algorithm" doesn't like this and has slowed down my account's growth but funny... my life has gone one regardless. LOL
I have been ping ponging back and forth between totally deleting Facebook and instagram and then back on. I am learning to find what is life giving and what is not. I live oversees and far away from people I know from my culture. I don’t have a local homeschool group so I do lean on the online community for that. I have found simply setting my phone down in a corner of the house while homeschooling or whatever I am doing and walking away has helped. I occasionally pick it up and check it to see if calls or messages have come in that need responses and then set it back down. Then I am very intentional when I am on social media. It reminds me of the old school days where the phone was stuck to the wall and I couldn’t take it with me everywhere. I set timers on my phone for certain apps too. That helps. I am excited about you putting more content on YouTube. I enjoy your videos there!
I can so relate, I have just deleted my instagram and Facebook apps I now only have Substack and YouTube. Like you my goal is to be more intentional about who I follow. I had thought about buying a dumb phone but then I would miss out on the few people I follow that really do have a positive influence on me.
